I struggle with my meditation practice. I go through periods, often six months at a time, when I am religious about it — sitting legs crossed first thing in the morning, for at least twenty minutes.

During this past turbulent year, the coronavirus pandemic has meant that most of us have had to endure isolation. One thing has become very apparent: good friendships matter greatly in our welfare.

We have an inner need to belong and connect. Relationships are the bedrock of our emotional well-being. No matter how strong we feel we are, we need to have relationships that nurture and sustain our strength throughout our lives.

One morning, I was driving to work happily listening to a history podcast when a truck cut me off and stopped in front of me. To make things worse, the driver stuck his hand out of the window and gave me the finger.

On Fridays, I do a 30-minute HIIT (high-intensity interval training) cycling session on the Peloton. This typically involves short periods of intense exercise alternated with recovery periods. Usually, it leaves me red in the face, exhausted and feeling miserable throughout the morning.

We often say someone is kind when we mean he’s nice.

A nice person is polite, smiles and pats us on the back. They are agreeable and regularly exchange pleasantries. No doubt, they make us feel good if even for a short while.

On the other hand, being kind means doing what’s best for someone. It means being objective and recognizing what’s best for them in the long run even if it’s not nice.

We all assume that a wake-up call is like something we see in the movies — an inciting incident. Wall Street trader has gone bankrupt. Then, within a short timeframe, he turns his life around.
